Organized by the Rose Foundation at the University of Galileo in Guatemala City, Guatemala, the conference featured keynote speakers from industry and academic leaders in education. Brian OliverSmith, Urban Planet Mobile CEO, delivered a keynote speech on Approaches to New Media in Education.

Marcela Mol-Reyes, Urban Planet Mobile Marketing Specialist for Latin America, was a featured panelist in a discussion called Technology in Education where she presented Writing Planet™ and discussed the use of new technologies to teach writing. Marcela was also a guest on the popular network television opinion show “Este o Este,” speaking about m-learning in education.
Guatemala: on the Verge of a Tech Revolution in Education
The enthusiasm and response around both mobile learning and also online learning with Writing Planet™ were huge! Guatemala is a country with a population of 15 million people, with 70% of the population under the age of 30. Many institutions are just now beginning to implement new technologies into their curriculums and classrooms. In addition, mobile phone use is growing at a rate of more than 100% annually, with 17 million mobile phone subscriptions in 2011. All of this indicates that Guatemala is on the verge of a mobile learning revolution!
